A full busload of SGYC members and their
guests enjoyed a trip to the Palm Springs
Follies. Before getting on the bus for the
trip to Palm Springs the day started at 8
a.m. with coffee, mimosas and lots and lots
of doughnuts.
The bus was stocked with drinks and snacks
enough to keep everyone happy until our arrival
at the Aqua Calienti Casino where there was
time for some gambling and lunch before continuing
to the show in beautiful downtown Palm Springs.
Many thanks to Bill & Lucille Thornburg
and John & Linda Mitchell who put together
this wonderful event.
The Follies has been a Palm Springs tradition
for the last ten years. The company of the
show are all 'senior citizens,' I think the
youngest was 56 years old and the oldest
was well into her eighties. These 'youngsters'
performed dazzling production numbers, song
and dance routines and rousing high kick
lines.
The master of ceremonies entertained with
a walk down memory lane spiced with many
jokes and the introduction of all the different
audience groups who arrived by bus, including
the SGYC. He had a few humorous references
relating to the fact that we were a yacht
club in Palm Springs.
The finale was a spectacular patriotic production
including a full size steam locomotive headed
right into the audience. All veterans of
military service were asked to stand; It
was amazing how large a percentage of the
audience were vets.
The trip home included the 50-50 drawing,
the proceeds of which will go to the construction
of our 2002 boat parade entry. There was
also an attempt to get the tired travelers
to finish the doughnuts.
